Good World (2006)

A wispy catalog of fragmented obsessions, Good World is a hermetic space delimited by the Timex ticks and sprung-cuckoo-clock fugues. It features bleary, mechanical woodwind melodies, drums that mince and shamble, Bouchard’s sweetly threatening sing-song vocals, and sinister elevator noir.” - Pitchforkmedia

“Good World is certainly an audio world unto its own.” -allmusic

“The songs work in some masochistic way and begin to hook themselves into your soul.” -boomkat

“There are some people that will most certainly hate this. They won’t “get” the music, they will hate the lack of any real specific story, they will feel cheated by the album’s length (or lack of it). And, on the other hand, there are some people that will love this. I am one of them.” -Popmatters

Summary

I still remember clearly when I sent the final mixes of this record to 5RC founder/owner Slim Moon before the release and he asked me very politely if I needed more time to finish the record. Apparently at some point in the recording process I lost touch with what was happening in popular music and embarked on something that was truly in a world of it’s own. This record is not normal, and will take many listens to appreciate - but that’s why it’s so special.

For a while after the release, with so many perplexed reviews and comments by fans I doubted myself - wondering if my experimentation with “Good World” had gone too far. Fortunately one day I had a show in Sicily, Italy and a smiling girl approached me - and although she didn’t speak english she said in a very happy voice “Good World”. It was one of those moments, however superficial, that seemed to make all the work put into the release worth it. Since then I’ve had similar experiences in France, Serbia, Poland and in small cities across the US. Although not for everyone, “Good World”  somehow crosses all language barriers and presents it’s meaning far below the surface in a special and somewhat magical place of it’s own.

Although it was somewhat of a commercial failure - to this date it is still a timeless work for those with hearts open enough to explore something new and completely different. -RB
